Siblings Identified in Northern Vigo County Murder-Suicide

VIGO COUNTY, IN — July 9, 2025 — The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the identities of two individuals found deceased in a tragic incident that occurred Wednesday evening on Shabur Avenue in northern Vigo County. Authorities have determined the case to be a murder-suicide involving a brother and sister.

The deceased have been identified as:

  • Keith Russell Chaney, 59, of Vigo County
  • Kathy Ann Cunning, 63, also of Vigo County

According to Sheriff Derek Fell, the preliminary investigation indicates that Keith Chaney fatally shot his sister, Kathy Cunning, before taking his own life with the same firearm. Emergency responders were dispatched to the residence after a welfare check was requested, and both individuals were discovered deceased upon arrival.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of Kathy Cunning and Keith Chaney during this time of unimaginable grief,” said Sheriff Fell in an official statement. “This is a heartbreaking loss not only for their family but for the entire community.”

Investigators continue to review evidence and speak with individuals who knew the siblings in hopes of understanding the full context surrounding the incident. However, authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.

Family and community members have expressed shock and sorrow over the sudden loss. Tributes to both Kathy and Keith have begun circulating online, remembering them as longtime residents and kind-hearted individuals.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family at a later date.
