In Loving Memory of Paul and Matthew Berkovitz Devoted Father and Son, Passionate Animal Rescuers, Heroes of the Sky

It is with profound sorrow and heartbreak that we share the devastating news of the tragic passing of Paul and Matthew Berkovitz, a devoted father and son whose lives were cut short in a small plane crash in Southern California. These two incredible men were not only bound by blood, but also by a shared mission—to rescue and protect animals in need.

Flying together as volunteers for Pilots N Paws, Paul and Matthew dedicated countless hours to saving the lives of animals across the United States. Their flights were often the final lifeline for dogs, cats, and other pets facing euthanasia, transporting them from overcrowded shelters to safe havens and forever homes. What they gave to the world cannot be measured in numbers alone. Their compassion, their dedication, and their selflessness changed lives—both human and animal.

Also aboard the plane with them was their cherished dog, Brody, a loyal companion who often joined them in the cockpit for their missions. Brody, who had become something of a furry mascot for their rescue flights, tragically perished in the crash as well. It’s difficult to imagine them without him, as the three were inseparable—a team bound by love, purpose, and the quiet joy of making a difference.

Their sudden and tragic loss leaves a tremendous void in the hearts of their family, friends, fellow volunteers, and the animal welfare community. Paul and Matthew were true heroes, not because they sought recognition, but because they showed up—again and again—for those who had no voice. Their love for animals was deep, unwavering, and evident in every mission they flew.
