Remembering Gary Amstutz: A Voice for Justice, A Devoted Father, A Heartbreaking Loss for Kern Valley

KERN VALLEY, CA — The Kern Valley community is mourning the tragic loss of Gary Amstutz, who passed away in late June due to complications stemming from intermittent power outages that plagued the region during an intense heatwave. His death is not only a personal tragedy but a profound reminder of the very issues he spent much of his life fighting to address.

Gary was more than a resident of Kern Valley — he was a fierce advocate for socioeconomic justice, a man who spoke up when others stayed silent, and a neighbor who cared deeply about the well-being of the vulnerable. He believed in equitable access to essential services, including utilities, housing, and healthcare. Many in the region knew him as someone who always had time to listen, to act, and to push for change — even when it was difficult.

But beyond his public voice, Gary’s most cherished role was that of father to his daughter Julia. Their bond was deep, built on love, trust, and unwavering support for one another. Now, in the wake of his passing, Julia is left to pick up the pieces — handling not only her father’s affairs but also caring for her disabled mother, a responsibility that has become all the more overwhelming during this time of grief.

The loss of Gary has created a ripple effect through the community. Friends, neighbors, and former colleagues have expressed sorrow over his untimely passing, as well as anger and frustration over the broader systemic issues — particularly the power grid failures and lack of infrastructure resilience — that contributed to it.

In response, a fundraiser has been established in Gary’s memory to help support Julia in this challenging transition. Donations will go toward travel expenses, legal proceedings, medical support for her mother, and other unexpected costs that have surfaced in the aftermath of this tragic event. Community members are rallying together to ease the financial burden and offer comfort as Julia navigates the emotionally and logistically complex process of mourning and caregiving.

Gary’s passing is a sobering reminder of the consequences of infrastructural neglect and the urgent need for compassion-centered policy at all levels of government. But more than that, it is a reminder of the human cost — of the voices silenced too soon, and the loved ones left behind to carry on.

Though he is no longer with us, Gary Amstutz’s legacy endures in the advocacy he championed, the lives he touched, and the daughter who now carries his strength forward.

Those who wish to honor his memory are encouraged to contribute to the official Gary Amstutz Memorial Fund and to continue the work he believed in: building a more just, compassionate, and prepared world for all.

Please keep Julia and her family in your thoughts.
