DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY – July 17, 2025 ,Police Scotland is appealing to the public for information following a tragic single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 23-year-old man near Dumfries on the evening of Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:55 p.m. on the C1s Old Military Road, between Castle Douglas and Dumfries, and involved a white Vauxhall Vivaro van. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, but despite their efforts, the young male driver was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed, and are being supported by specially trained officers during this incredibly difficult time.
The crash not only took a young life but also impacted several animals traveling in the vehicle. Authorities confirmed that there were three dogs inside the van at the time of the collision. Tragically, one of the dogs had to be euthanized due to the severity of its injuries, while the remaining two were transported to a nearby veterinary clinic for medical treatment.
The road was closed to traffic for several hours as officers from Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit conducted a full examination of the crash site. The road was reopened at approximately 2:50 a.m. on Thursday, July 17.
Sergeant Colin Ramage, who is leading the investigation, expressed his condolences:
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died. This is a tragic incident that has left a young life lost and caused further trauma. We are working to understand exactly what happened and are asking for the public’s help.”
Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the van before or during the incident, and for any motorists who were in the area between Castle Douglas and Dumfries around the time of the crash, particularly those with dash-cam footage, to come forward. Such footage could prove vital in helping officers piece together the circumstances leading up to the collision.
