Lillian Dana Prosperino Obituary — Remembering a Pillar of Compassion and Harm Reduction

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lillian Dana Prosperino, affectionately known as Lill, who left us on June 19, 2025. Lill was a beloved friend, mentor, and a foundational member of the Virginia Harm Reduction Coalition (VHRC), whose tireless dedication shaped and strengthened harm reduction efforts across Appalachia and beyond.

Lill’s journey with VHRC began in its earliest days, where their steady presence and unwavering commitment became a cornerstone of the organization’s success. From navigating the rugged hollers of West Virginia alongside colleagues Lawson Koeppel and Alina Lemire, to packing countless harm reduction kits behind the Ramada, Lill’s work was a testament to quiet dedication and relentless purpose.

Their belief in meeting people exactly where they were—geographically, emotionally, and socially—was not simply a guiding principle but a lived reality. One of the most enduring memories of Lill is their warm smile, often seen as they handed out home-brewed herbal salves, small gifts that carried immense meaning for participants and staff alike. These salves symbolized the deep connection Lill fostered with the land and the healing traditions they embraced, blending age-old knowledge with modern science.

Lill’s contributions extended well beyond logistics. They were a healer, a connector, and a builder of sustainable, compassionate communities. Their presence commanded respect and attention not because they sought the spotlight, but because their wisdom, clarity, and authenticity resonated deeply with all who had the privilege to know them.

As an educator and mentor, Lill shared their expertise generously. They served as a subject matter expert for the National Harm Reduction Technical Assistance Center at the CDC and were a valued staff member at the National Harm Reduction Coalition. Through their training and guidance, many harm reduction workers gained new insights and skills, helping to advance the movement with empathy and precision.

But above all, Lill was a friend unlike any other—steadfast in solidarity and mutual aid, offering support without expectation of recognition, and lifting others through both joyous triumphs and difficult trials. Their authenticity and warmth made everyone around them feel truly seen, heard, and valued—perhaps their greatest gift.

Lill’s legacy is vast and enduring. Their life’s work has saved countless lives and has set a compassionate standard for all who follow in their footsteps. Though words cannot fully capture the depth of our gratitude or the ache of their absence, we are committed to carrying their spirit forward. Each kit packed, every life touched, and all acts of kindness carried out in their name keep Lill’s memory alive.

We are forever thankful for the time we shared with Lillian Dana Prosperino. Rest in power, dear Lill. Your light continues to guide and inspire us all.

If you knew Lill or would like to share memories, stories, or condolences, please reach out to the Virginia Harm Reduction Coalition community as we come together to celebrate a life well lived and a cause nobly served.
