Tragic Morning in Sloan: Toddler Shot, Multiple Victims in Active Shooting Incident on Lackawanna Avenue

Sloan, N.Y. — July 20, 2025 — A terrifying and chaotic scene unfolded Sunday morning in Sloan, New York, after a shooting was reported at 150 Lackawanna Avenue, leaving a 2-year-old child with a gunshot wound to the chest and at least two others injured. The incident began unfolding around 10:22 a.m., and a rapid sequence of emergency responses followed.

According to dispatch records, a third-party caller reported the shooting and stated that a baby had been shot. Emergency units from Sloan Fire and law enforcement agencies immediately responded to the location, where they encountered an active and dangerous situation. By 10:25 a.m., responders confirmed that the suspect was still inside the residence, and that the scene was not yet secure.

Sloan Fire personnel were already on-site and located the infant with a gunshot wound (GSW) to the lower chest. At the time, the child was conscious, alert, and breathing, and a chest seal had been applied in an attempt to stabilize the toddler’s condition. A second victim, a male shot in the leg, was also located at the scene.

By 10:26 a.m., one suspect was reportedly being held at gunpoint by police, and officers requested immediate backup to the rear of the property. Just a minute later, at 10:27 a.m., officers confirmed one suspect was in custody, but warned that a second individual may still be outstanding, last seen fleeing northbound on Reiman Street.

Emergency services quickly initiated a “load and go” protocol for the child due to the severity of the injury. Sloan Fire and EMS worked urgently, and by 10:29 a.m., they had the child en route to the hospital under active medical care. A police escort from Cheektowaga Police Department (CPD) and AMR ambulance units was provided to ensure the fastest possible route to emergency treatment.

By 10:31 a.m., reports came in of a male suspect running through yards on Atlantic Street, adding further complexity to an already tense and dangerous situation. The description of the potentially armed suspect was given as a Black male, approximately 6’1”, wearing a brown hoodie and white-washed jeans.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that one suspect is now in custody, while another person with a gunshot wound to the leg remains outstanding. Investigators are working to determine whether the second gunshot victim was a bystander, a resident, or possibly involved in the shooting.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear at this time, and authorities are actively investigating the incident, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing surveillance footage from the area. The identity and condition of the baby have not been publicly released due to privacy considerations, but emergency responders confirmed that the child was stable during transport.

This heartbreaking incident has shaken the Sloan and Cheektowaga communities, sparking concern and calls for justice. Community leaders and residents have already begun expressing their prayers and support for the injured child and all affected.
