CORAM, NY — A tragic motor vehicle accident late Saturday night claimed the life of Roger Luo, a 36-year-old man from Fresh Meadows, Queens, and left two others injured in a fiery two-vehicle crash at a busy Long Island intersection. The deadly collision occurred on July 20, 2025, at approximately 9:45 p.m., at the crossroads of Route 112 and County Road 83, sending shockwaves through both the Coram and Queens communities.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Roger Luo was driving a 2022 Honda Accord southbound on Route 112 when he collided with a 2003 GMC Yukon traveling northeast on County Road 83. The impact was catastrophic, causing the Yukon to overturn and catch fire on the roadway.
When officers from the Sixth Precinct arrived, they found Roger Luo unconscious and trapped inside the severely damaged Honda Accord. Responding officers heroically worked to extract him from the wreckage and immediately began administering CPR. He was transported by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital, where, despite valiant efforts by medical staff, Roger Luo later succumbed to his injuries. His passing marks a heartbreaking loss for his family, friends, and the larger Queens community, where he was known as a kind and hardworking individual.
The GMC Yukon was being operated by 48-year-old Todd Fontana of Coram, and his 16-year-old daughter, Roxy Fontana, of Kannapolis, North Carolina, was a passenger. Both were successfully pulled from the burning vehicle by quick-acting patrol officers. Their rapid response likely saved the Fontanas’ lives, as the SUV became engulfed in flames shortly after the rescue.
Todd and Roxy Fontana were also taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where they are being treated for injuries that have been described as non-life-threatening. The physical recovery ahead will be significant, but both are expected to survive.
Following the collision, both the Honda Accord and the GMC Yukon were impounded for mechanical and safety inspections, a standard part of the investigation process. The Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad continues to actively investigate the circumstances that led to the crash, which remains open and ongoing.
Detectives are urging anyone who may have witnessed the accident, or who has information that might assist with the case, to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652. Even seemingly minor details may prove crucial in understanding how this tragic series of events unfolded.
