BRISTOL, W.Va. — With deep sadness, the family of George Dennis Owens, 83, of the Lake Floyd community in Bristol, announces his peaceful passing on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. A devoted father, grandfather, public servant, and friend to many, George’s legacy is etched into the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Born on June 25, 1942, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, George was the son of the late George W. Owens and Lillie “Lil” Asher Owens. Raised with a strong sense of family, community, and service, George would carry those values with him throughout his life, becoming a pillar in both his profession and the towns he served.
A Life of Service and Dedication
George Owens was a proud graduate of Bridgeport High School, where he began cultivating the work ethic and leadership qualities that would define his future. He built a distinguished career with Finley Fire Equipment, where he served faithfully for 36 years as a sales representative and manager. Colleagues recall his professionalism, loyalty, and ability to bring calm and solutions to even the most complex situations.
In addition to his civilian career, George devoted much of his life to public safety and fire service. He was a respected and longtime member of the Nutter Fort Fire Department, where he served for 25 years, including more than 20 years as Fire Chief. Under his leadership, the department grew in both capability and respect. Fellow firefighters remember him as a mentor and steady hand—someone who led with integrity and never asked for more than he was willing to give himself.
Beloved by Family and Known as “Papaw Jeep”
Though George was accomplished in his professional life, his greatest joy was found in his family. He is survived by:
- His son, George D. “Denny” “DJ” Owens, Jr., and wife JD of Bridgeport
- His daughter, Sherri Kennedy of Lost Creek
- His stepson, Ryan Roberts, and wife Helen
- Three beloved grandchildren: Matthew Owens, Owen Roberts, and Ava Roberts
- His brother, Ron Owens, and wife Karen of Clarksburg
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Kimberly Hilliard, whose memory remained close to his heart throughout his life.
To his grandchildren and many in the community, George was affectionately known as “Papaw Jeep,” a nickname inspired by his enduring love for Jeeps, which he drove with pride throughout the years. Whether it was taking the kids for rides, attending family gatherings, or sharing stories by the lake, George relished every opportunity to be present in their lives.
A Gentle Soul Who Loved Nature and Family
George found peace and happiness in simple pleasures. He was a passionate fly fisherman, and often sought solace on the water with rod in hand and nature surrounding him. He believed in quality time and never missed a chance to sit with his grandkids, offer advice, or just enjoy a quiet moment watching the lake from his home in Lake Floyd.
His warmth, humility, and ever-ready smile made him a friend to all. He had a way of making everyone feel like family, and his legacy of kindness will endure in the stories, traditions, and lives he touched.
Honoring His Life
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, located at 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort, on Thursday, July 24, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service celebrating George’s life will be held at the funeral home on Friday, July 25, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Ron Owens officiating. Following the service, George will be laid to rest at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

George Dennis Owens lived a life marked by selfless service, deep compassion, and unwavering love for family. His legacy will live on through the generations he inspired and the communities he strengthened. As we mourn his loss, we also give thanks for a life so well lived—and for the memories he gave us that will never fade.
He will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.
