BIRMINGHAM, AL — The city of Birmingham is reeling after a tragic shooting claimed the life of 32-year-old Devin Wayne Hughes, a local man remembered by many for his big heart and resilient spirit. Devin was found fatally shot inside a car that had crashed into the front yard of a residence around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
According to Birmingham Police, the chain of events began at an undisclosed location where Devin and two passengers were suddenly ambushed by gunfire. Investigators believe the trio was sitting in or near the vehicle when unknown assailants opened fire. Despite being critically injured, Devin managed to drive away from the scene of the shooting in a desperate attempt to escape — but his injuries proved too severe. A short distance away, the car left the roadway and crashed into the front yard of a nearby home.
