it is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of John Benner, a revered figure in the worlds of tactical defense, law enforcement, and blade design. John was not only the designer of KA-BAR’s legendary TDI LE knife, but he was also a soldier, a teacher, a mentor, and above all, a man who dedicated his life to the service and protection of others.
John’s journey began in the U.S. Army, where he honorably served as a Military Police officer during the Vietnam War. After returning home, his commitment to public safety led him to a distinguished 40-year career in law enforcement, where he rose through the ranks and left an indelible mark on every department he served.
Driven by a passion for practical training and real-world readiness, John founded the Tactical Defense Institute (TDI)—a training facility in Ohio that would go on to shape thousands of lives. His approach was never simply about tactics or firearms; it was about leadership, accountability, and mindset. As Ethan Becker of Becker Knife & Tool once remarked, “John didn’t have a training company, he had a leadership academy.” That sentiment captures the spirit of a man whose influence extended far beyond the range or classroom.
John’s partnership with KA-BAR brought to life one of the most enduring self-defense tools on the market: the Original TDI Law Enforcement Knife. For over two decades, this compact, no-nonsense blade has been trusted by police officers, first responders, and civilians alike for its intuitive design and effectiveness. It wasn’t just a knife—it was the embodiment of John’s philosophy: simple, efficient, and made to protect.
But for those of us who knew John personally, his greatest weapon wasn’t a blade or a firearm—it was his unwavering kindness, humility, and generosity. Standing tall in both stature and spirit, John was a gentle giant whose presence brought comfort and confidence. He was as quick to share a warm smile and a story as he was to deliver sage advice on a tough decision.
John was more than a KA-BAR designer, more than a veteran, and more than a trainer. He was a true friend, a mentor to many, and a hero to countless. His legacy lives on through the lives he trained, the tools he created, and the leadership values he instilled in all who had the honor of knowing him.
We at KA-BAR—and across the broader law enforcement and tactical communities—mourn the loss of a man who gave his all and asked for little in return. As we grieve, we also celebrate the life of a patriot, a protector, and a pioneer.
Rest easy, John. You stood the line with strength, grace, and courage. You will never be forgotten.
