CLEARWATER, FL — July 23, 2025 — A heartbreaking incident unfolded late Wednesday afternoon in unincorporated Clearwater, as a teenager lost his life to gun violence during a firearm transaction gone tragically wrong. Detectives from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Robbery & Homicide Unit are leading the investigation into the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Ahmad Albayati, a resident of Largo.

At approximately 5:35 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 5300 block of Laurel Place following a 911 call reporting a male lying in the street with apparent gunshot wounds. Responding units arrived swiftly on scene and discovered the victim, later identified as Albayati, suffering from critical injuries caused by at least one gunshot wound to the back and upper chest.

Emergency medical personnel quickly transported Albayati to a nearby hospital in an effort to save his life. Despite their best efforts, the young teen was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival. His sudden and violent death has rocked the local community and left a grieving family grappling with the incomprehensible loss of their son.

Details of the Shooting Emerge

As detectives canvassed the scene and gathered evidence, they soon uncovered the events that led to the deadly exchange. According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Ahmad Albayati had arranged to meet 19-year-old James Acosta of St. Petersburg for the purpose of purchasing a firearm. During their interaction, something went terribly wrong.

Investigators report that during the exchange, Acosta shot Albayati without warning, striking him fatally. Acosta then fled the scene before deputies arrived. The motives behind the shooting remain under investigation, but authorities have confirmed the meeting was centered around the illegal sale of a weapon.

In the hours that followed, detectives worked diligently to locate Acosta. Thanks to leads developed through witness interviews and digital communications, Acosta was tracked down and taken into custody without further incident.

Charges Filed

James Acosta now faces multiple serious charges, including:

  • Murder in the Third Degree
  • Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communications Device
  • Furnishing a Firearm to a Minor

He is currently being held at the Pinellas County Jail as the investigation continues. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether additional individuals may be involved or whether the firearm in question has been recovered.

Community Reaction and Broader Implications

This tragic incident has once again placed a spotlight on the growing dangers surrounding illegal gun transactions and the increased accessibility of firearms to underage individuals. Community leaders and law enforcement officials are urging parents, guardians, and peers to talk to youth about the real dangers of gun violence, particularly in unregulated environments.
