Medina, OH — The Medina Police Department is releasing details surrounding a series of related incidents that occurred on the night of Friday, July 25, 2025, culminating in a shooting and the subsequent arrest of 33-year-old David J. Oberacker, a Medina resident.
At approximately 10:37 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence on Circle Drive following a report of criminal damaging. The caller stated that David J. Oberacker, an individual known to her, had smashed the rear window of her vehicle and fled the area on foot. Witnesses informed police that Oberacker had been at the residence earlier in the day and had been told to leave.
As officers conducted the investigation at Circle Drive, a second emergency call came in at 10:44 p.m., reporting that a male had been shot near the intersection of Baxter Street and Lafayette Road. Responding officers found a male victim on the sidewalk suffering from two gunshot wounds. The victim was immediately given emergency medical aid by Medina Police officers, Medina LST, and the Medina Fire Department, before being transported to Medina Hospital and later transferred to a trauma center. He is currently in stable condition and expected to recover.
Shortly after the shooting, David J. Oberacker returned to the Circle Drive residence on an electric bicycle, visibly injured and covered in blood. Officers detained him at the scene and recovered a 9mm handgun in his possession. Oberacker received treatment for his injuries and was placed under arrest.
Following his arrest, detectives launched a coordinated investigation at both the Circle Drive and Baxter Street locations. Search warrants were executed, and investigators collected critical physical evidence, including:
- A 9mm firearm believed to have been used in the shooting
- Spent shell casings recovered from the scene
- Clothing worn during the incident
- Additional personal items connected to Oberacker
As a result of the investigation, David J. Oberacker has been formally charged with Felonious Assault under Ohio Revised Code 2903.11(A)(1), a second-degree felony, for causing serious physical harm to the shooting victim.
The Medina County Sheriff’s Office and Medina Township Police Department provided vital support throughout the incident response and subsequent investigation.
At this time, no other suspects are being sought, though the case remains open. Medina Police detectives are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses to further clarify the events that led to the shooting.
