MT. VERNON, Ill. — The Mt. Vernon Police Department has released the identities of the two men who were fatally shot during a mass shooting early this morning in the 600 block of South 15th Street. The tragic event has rocked the local community and left five additional individuals injured.
The victims have been identified as:
- Zomarrius Williams, 20, of Mt. Vernon
- Demonta Woodward, 26, of Mounds
According to police, both young men succumbed to injuries sustained during the shooting, which occurred during the early morning hours of Sunday, July 27, 2025. Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire. Despite lifesaving efforts, both Williams and Woodward were pronounced dead.
Williams, a Mt. Vernon native, was widely known among peers for his outgoing personality and passion for music and community gatherings. Woodward, originally from Mounds, was described by friends and family as a hardworking, loyal individual with strong ties to Southern Illinois.
Arrest Announced
In a major development, Mt. Vernon Police have announced the arrest of Jerria J. Smith, a 22-year-old woman from Mt. Vernon. Smith is facing two felony charges:
- Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm
- Obstruction of Justice
Authorities say Smith’s involvement in the shooting is still under investigation and additional charges may be forthcoming.
Five Others Injured
In addition to the two fatalities, five other people sustained gunshot wounds during the incident.
