MEMPHIS, Tenn. — 19-Year-Old Jonathan Hill Arrested After Fatally Shooting Cousin Elijah Hill in the Head

A late-night tragedy unfolded in Memphis on Friday, July 25, when police arrested Jonathan Hill, 19, after he admitted to shooting his cousin, Elijah Hill, in the head during what he described as an accidental incident.

The Memphis Police Department responded just before midnight to a report of a shooting at the Iris Luxury Apartments on Washington Avenue, located near Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. Upon arrival, officers discovered 18-year-old Elijah Hill suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

According to an arrest affidavit, Jonathan Hill told investigators that he and Elijah had been outside the apartment playing with a handgun. Hill stated he pointed the weapon at Elijah, pulled the trigger, and accidentally shot him. The two were reportedly close cousins.

Police immediately began a search of the area and the apartment. During the investigation, officers recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting. Hill was taken into custody at the scene. After waiving his Miranda rights, he gave a full confession and admitted to shooting his cousin.

Hill has been charged with aggravated assault and is currently being held without bond at the Shelby County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, July 28.

The Memphis Police Department has not yet released information regarding how the firearm was obtained or whether it was legally owned.

The heartbreaking event has rocked the community, leaving friends, neighbors, and family members reeling from the consequences of a momentary lapse in judgment.

“Elijah was a good kid,” one neighbor said. “He had a bright future ahead of him. This is just devastating.”

The case serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of firearms when handled irresponsibly. Advocates are urging families to talk to their teens about gun safety and to keep weapons secured and inaccessible.

As of now, Elijah Hill remains in critical condition, and the investigation into the shooting continues.
