McHenry, IL — A devastating three-vehicle crash in the early hours of Monday, July 28, 2025, has left two young lives tragically cut short and another teenager seriously injured. On Tuesday, the McHenry Police Department announced the arrest and formal charging of 18-year-old Jason K. Land, a resident of Fox River Grove, in connection with the fatal incident.
According to police, emergency responders were dispatched around 12:30 a.m. to the intersection of Richmond Road (IL Route 31) and McCullom Lake Road after receiving reports of a violent multi-vehicle collision. Upon arrival, officers and the McHenry Township Fire Protection District discovered a chaotic and heartbreaking scene involving three vehicles—one of which was mangled beyond recognition.
The Crash
Preliminary findings from the McHenry County Regional Crash Assistance Team indicate that Land was driving a red 2006 Audi A4 southbound on Richmond Road at a dangerously high speed. He allegedly ran a red light and slammed into a black 2015 Nissan Sentra that was making a lawful left turn onto McCullom Lake Road.
The force of the impact was so severe that it propelled the Nissan into a stationary, unoccupied 2003 Toyota Echo, which was parked nearby.
Inside the Nissan were two occupants: a 19-year-old female driver and her 14-year-old male passenger. Tragically, both were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not yet been publicly released as officials work to notify the families.
Arrest and Charges
Jason Land, who was the sole occupant of the Audi, sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. After receiving medical treatment, he was taken into custody by McHenry Police.
Following a review of the evidence and consultation with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, Land now faces the following charges:
- 2 counts of Aggravated DUI – Accident Resulting in Death (Class 2 Felonies)
- 2 counts of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol (Class A Misdemeanors)
- 2 counts of DUI – BAC .08 or More (Class A Misdemeanors)
- 1 count of Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident (Petty Offense)
He has been booked into the McHenry County Jail, where he awaits an initial court appearance. Officials have not yet confirmed the results of his toxicology report but believe that alcohol played a significant role in the deadly crash.
Community Mourning and Outrage
As word of the tragic deaths spread, shock and grief rippled throughout the McHenry community. Friends, classmates, and teachers of the teenage victims gathered near the crash site on Monday night to place flowers, candles, and notes in remembrance.
“It’s hard to comprehend,” said a local high school teacher who taught one of the victims. “Two young people with so much life ahead of them, taken in an instant because of someone else’s reckless choices.”
Parents and advocates are also calling for greater accountability and public education around underage drinking and driving. Several community members have voiced outrage, demanding justice and the full weight of the law be applied in the case.
Investigation Continues
The intersection of Richmond Road and McCullom Lake Road remained closed for more than seven hours on Monday as authorities conducted a detailed reconstruction of the scene. Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing vehicle data to piece together the moments leading up to the crash.
McHenry Police are urging anyone with further information about the incident to come forward. Those who wish to remain anonymous may do so by calling the McHenry Police Department’s tip line at 815-363-2124.
A Plea for Responsibility
This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the real-life consequences of impaired and reckless driving, especially among young, inexperienced drivers. As the legal process unfolds, the McHenry community is left grappling with an overwhelming sense of loss and a renewed call for action to prevent such senseless deaths in the future.
May the memories of the two young lives lost serve as a call to accountability, awareness, and lasting change.
