TULSA, OK — A community outreach event at St. Thomas More Catholic Church turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Saturday, July 27, 2025, when 15-year-old Alexander Puentes was fatally shot during a confrontation at the church festival. Tulsa police have now confirmed that another 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection to Alexander’s death.
The shooting occurred around 9:10 p.m. near 27th and 129th East Avenue, where families and church members had gathered for a weekend celebration intended to bring people together in fellowship and faith. According to investigators, the suspect arrived at the event and became involved in a heated altercation with Alexander Puentes. Witnesses reported that the fight quickly escalated, and the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot Alexander before fleeing the scene.
Emergency crews responded immediately, and Alexander was transported to a nearby hospital. Sadly, despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead later that evening.
Investigation Leads to Arrest
Following the shooting, detectives with the Tulsa Police Department launched a fast-moving investigation. Officers canvassed the surrounding area and soon discovered a backpack containing a handgun discarded in a backyard southeast of the church — believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.
Detectives identified the teenage suspect based on witness statements and evidence recovered from the scene. After contacting his mother, the suspect voluntarily turned himself in around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, July 29. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Tulsa County Juvenile Center, where he was booked on a charge of first-degree murder.
Due to his age, the suspect’s name has not been publicly released. Authorities emphasized that this is an arrest, not a conviction, and the case will proceed through the juvenile justice system.
