A Devoted Father, Beloved Husband, Courageous Officer, and True New Yorker

It is with immense grief and profound respect that we mourn the tragic loss of Officer Didarul Islam, a brave and devoted member of the New York City Police Department, who was killed in the line of duty on Monday, July 28, 2025. He was 36 years old.

A nearly four-year veteran of the force, Officer Islam was fatally shot while courageously confronting a gunman during a horrific mass shooting inside 345 Park Avenue, a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper. He leaves behind a legacy of honor, service, and unwavering commitment to the city and people he loved so deeply.

Officer Islam was working an off-duty assignment as a uniformed security guard for Rudin Management Company when the tragic events unfolded. Despite not being on patrol, he sprang into action — protecting civilians and upholding his oath, even at the cost of his own life. He was described by those who knew him as a man of integrity, devotion, and quiet heroism.

Mayor Eric Adams, speaking at a somber press conference following the tragedy, honored Officer Islam’s selfless sacrifice:

“He was doing what he does best, as all members of the police department carry out — he was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers. He’s an immigrant from Bangladesh, and he loved this city. Everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person.”

A proud Bangladeshi-American, Didarul Islam immigrated to the United States in pursuit of a better life — one marked by service, faith, and family. He joined the NYPD in December 2021 and was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, where he was respected by colleagues and admired by the community he served.

Above all, Officer Islam was a dedicated husband and father. He is survived by his beloved wife, who is eight months pregnant with their third child — a daughter who will now grow up hearing stories of her father’s bravery. The couple also shared two young sons, who now face a future without the guiding presence of the man who loved them beyond measure.

Friends, family, and fellow officers describe Didarul as a man who embodied quiet strength, humility, and an unshakable sense of duty. He lived his life grounded in faith, motivated by love for his family, and driven by a calling to serve and protect others.

The senseless act that took his life — carried out by Shane Tamura, 27, who also fatally shot four other civilians and injured several more before turning the weapon on himself — has shocked the city and deepened its sorrow. Yet in the face of horror, Officer Islam stood tall, fulfilling the ultimate measure of his duty.

A City in Mourning, A Hero Remembered

The NYPD, alongside the Islamic and Bangladeshi-American communities, is preparing a full ceremonial honor to recognize Officer Islam’s heroism. Plans for a public memorial service and police funeral are underway, with city leaders expected to attend and offer tributes.

Commissioner Edward Caban issued a statement mourning the loss:

“Officer Didarul Islam was everything we ask our officers to be — courageous, compassionate, and committed to the safety of others. His actions saved lives, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

As New Yorkers light candles, leave flowers outside precinct doors, and pray for his family, we remember Didarul not only as a fallen officer but as a man whose life was rooted in love, sacrifice, and quiet courage.

He is gone far too soon, but his spirit will live on in his children, his family, and in the grateful city he gave his life to protect.

Rest in eternal peace, Officer Didarul Islam.

Your service will never be forgotten. Your sacrifice will always be honored.
