Active Shooter Reported in Midtown Manhattan: NYPD Responds to Chaotic Scene Near Blackstone Building

NEW YORK CITY — A terrifying scene unfolded Monday afternoon in Midtown Manhattan, as reports of an active shooter sent shockwaves through one of the busiest and most densely populated areas of New York City. Authorities confirm that a suspect armed with a semi-automatic rifle opened fire near the Blackstone Building on the East Side of Midtown, prompting a massive law enforcement response and widespread public concern.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the initial emergency call came in shortly after 12:15 p.m., reporting gunshots and a heavily armed individual wearing a possible bulletproof vest near East 52nd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic, as pedestrians ran for cover and businesses quickly locked their doors to shelter those nearby.

The shooter is believed to have entered or targeted the Blackstone office building, one of the city’s most prominent financial landmarks, which also houses other major tenants including the National Football League (NFL) headquarters. Reports from inside the building indicate the shooter may have opened fire on a high floor before authorities gained access.

Unconfirmed reports suggest multiple casualties, though the exact number of victims has not yet been officially released. Early indications suggest that a police officer and at least one civilian may be among the injured. Emergency medical services have transported several individuals to nearby hospitals for treatment, and one officer is said to be in critical condition at this time.

Security footage and photos circulating online show a man in a sport coat, visibly armed with a rifle possibly outfitted with a suppressor, walking calmly near the scene. NYPD has since locked down the area, advising the public to avoid East 52nd Street and surrounding blocks as investigators continue to secure the building and search for potential accomplices or further threats.

Officials have not released the identity of the suspect, nor confirmed whether the shooter acted alone or had a specific motive. As of now, it remains unclear if the suspect was neutralized, arrested, or is still at large. Multiple agencies, including the FBI and ATF, have reportedly joined the NYPD in the ongoing investigation.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams was briefed on the situation and is expected to issue a public statement shortly. Meanwhile, city officials are urging calm and vigilance as the investigation continues.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates as more information becomes available.
