RALEIGH, NC – A fatal pedestrian crash early Tuesday morning has led to the arrest of a Raleigh man on suspicion of impaired driving. The tragic incident occurred on July 29, 2025, around 1:14 a.m. in the 2300 block of New Bern Avenue, where 57-year-old Alonzo Hinton was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing the street.
Officers from the Raleigh Police Department responded promptly to the scene and found Hinton suffering from critical injuries. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a nearby hospital, but despite life-saving efforts, Hinton was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The preliminary investigation determined that Antonio Maurice Dickens, 44, was driving the vehicle that struck Hinton. Police said Hinton was attempting to cross New Bern Avenue when Dickens’ vehicle hit him. The specific circumstances of the crossing — including whether Hinton was in a designated crosswalk or whether lighting conditions played a role — have not yet been disclosed and remain under active investigation.
During their initial interaction with Dickens at the scene, officers observed signs of impairment. Further examination led to Dickens being placed under arrest and charged with Driving While Impaired (DWI). Additional charges may be pending as investigators continue to analyze the evidence and await toxicology results.
Dickens, a Raleigh resident, was taken into custody without incident. His arrest photo was released to the public following formal booking.
The crash occurred in a stretch of New Bern Avenue that has seen previous pedestrian safety concerns due to its traffic volume, lighting conditions, and proximity to residential neighborhoods. Community leaders have, in the past, called for additional safety measures along the corridor, including improved crosswalks, speed limit enforcement, and pedestrian signals.
Hinton’s death has prompted renewed concern among local residents. Family members described Alonzo Hinton as a kind, quiet man who lived in East Raleigh and was well-known in his neighborhood. “He didn’t deserve to die like this,” said Linda Hinton, his sister. “He was just walking home. He had dreams. He had people who loved him.”
