Fatal Crash in Westfield Township Claims Life of Springfield Man, Injures Family Members — OSHP Investigating

WESTFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH — The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Medina Post is investigating a tragic accident that claimed the life of Ryan L. Broyles Sr., 42, and left his wife and children injured after their vehicle hydroplaned and struck a parked semi-truck along Interstate 71.

The crash occurred on Monday evening, July 28, 2025, around 7:20 p.m., near mile marker 208 in Westfield Township. A 2020 Nissan Armada, driven by Jessica R. Broyles, 41, of Springfield, Missouri, was traveling southbound when it lost traction in wet conditions, veered off the roadway, and collided with a commercial tractor-trailer that was parked on the right shoulder.

Jessica Broyles was transported to Akron General Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Her husband, Ryan Broyles Sr., who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV was also occupied by their son, Ryan L. Broyles Jr., 20, who suffered serious injuries and was also taken to Akron General Hospital. Additionally, the Broyles’ three minor children—whose names are being withheld due to their age—were transported to Akron Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The commercial semi-truck involved in the crash was operated by Adrienne Y. Carpenter, 38, of Newport, Virginia. Carpenter was not injured in the incident and cooperated fully with authorities at the scene.

Multiple agencies responded, including:

  • Medina County Sheriff’s Office
  • Westfield Center Fire Department and EMS
  • Wadsworth EMS
  • Lodi Fire Department and EMS

Due to the severity of the crash, Interstate 71 southbound was temporarily closed for approximately one hour to allow emergency personnel to assist victims and investigate the scene.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that hydroplaning appears to be a primary factor in the crash. The vehicle left the paved roadway and struck the commercial truck with significant force. Investigators continue to examine the conditions leading up to the incident, including weather, speed, and road surface conditions.
