AIKEN COUNTY, S.C – A quiet Tuesday morning was shattered by violence in the Jackson community as a young man was found shot to death in his own driveway. The Aiken County Coroner’s Office, in coordination with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, has launched a full investigation into the incident that claimed the life of 27-year-old Dequon Hill.
At approximately 2:11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, deputies with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reporting gunfire in the 5000 block of North Silverton Street in Jackson, a small community near the Georgia-South Carolina border. Upon arrival, deputies canvassed the area and discovered a tragic scene—a man slumped over and unresponsive in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, which was parked in the driveway of his home.
The victim was soon identified as Dequon Hill, a Jackson resident. Emergency medical responders were called to the scene, but despite life-saving efforts, Hill was pronounced dead at 3:40 a.m. Authorities say he died from multiple gunshot wounds to the body.
According to the Coroner’s Office, Hill’s body will be transported to Newberry later this week for a full autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death. Investigators are working to piece together the events that led to the shooting, including whether the incident may have been targeted or random, and whether any suspects were seen in the area at the time of the gunfire.
As of now, no arrests have been made and no persons of interest have been named publicly.
The shooting has left the tight-knit Jackson community reeling, with neighbors expressing shock and sadness over the violent death of a young man described as quiet and respectful. Some residents reported hearing multiple gunshots but did not see any suspicious individuals or vehicles fleeing the scene.
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office and the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office have both confirmed the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information—no matter how minor it may seem—to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
“We are following up on leads and asking the community to help us bring justice for the victim and his family,” said a spokesperson for the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
Anyone with information related to the shooting is encouraged to contact the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 648-6811 or submit a tip through CrimeStoppers.
As the investigation moves forward, the community continues to grieve the loss of Dequon Hill, whose life was cut short by senseless violence in the early hours of the morning. More details will be released as they become available.
