ZION, Illinois — Nearly nine months after a devastating car crash claimed the life of 5-year-old Sy’mere McKnight, authorities have arrested the child’s father, Steven McKnight Jr., in connection with the tragedy. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced that McKnight is now facing multiple felony charges, including aggravated DUI and reckless homicide, for his role in the crash that shook the Beach Park community.
A Tragic Day on Green Bay Road
The fatal incident occurred in November 2024, along Green Bay Road, just north of Hart Street in Beach Park, Illinois. According to investigators, Steven McKnight Jr., of Zion, was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Malibu when the vehicle collided head-on with a GMC Sierra driven by a 57-year-old man from Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.
What authorities found at the scene was both alarming and heartbreaking: two young children were passengers in McKnight’s vehicle—neither of whom was wearing a seatbelt. Even more shockingly, officials report that a two-year-old child was seated on McKnight’s lap while he was driving. The lack of restraint and basic safety precautions tragically contributed to the outcome.
The 5-year-old boy, identified as Sy’mere McKnight, sustained critical injuries in the crash and was later pronounced dead. The second child survived but was also injured. The driver of the GMC Sierra also suffered injuries, though his condition has not been publicly disclosed.
