Tragedy at Church Camp: Remembering Langston Britton

What began as a hopeful, faith-filled five-day retreat to northern Wisconsin for students from Community Christian Church in Plainfield has ended in tragedy and heartbreak. The high school youth group, accompanied by church leaders and chaperones, had departed earlier in the week to attend an annual summer church camp—an event cherished by many for its opportunities for spiritual growth, fellowship, and outdoor adventure. But on Friday afternoon, July 25, 2025, the trip took a devastating turn when one of their own, 16-year-old Langston Britton, tragically drowned during a recreational swim in the lake near the campgrounds.

According to authorities and camp staff, the incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. as a group of students was participating in supervised lake activities. Langston, known among friends and family for his bright smile, deep sense of compassion, and love for music and basketball, reportedly entered the water with several friends. Moments later, witnesses say he appeared to be in distress. Lifeguards and staff acted swiftly, initiating rescue efforts, but despite their rapid response, Langston was pulled from the water unresponsive.

Emergency services were called immediately, and CPR was administered on-site. He was transported to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The exact circumstances surrounding the drowning are still under investigation, and authorities have confirmed that no foul play is suspected.

News of Langston’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through both the camp community and his hometown of Plainfield, Illinois. A rising junior at Plainfield Central High School, Langston was deeply involved in his church’s youth ministry and had plans to serve on the worship team. Friends describe him as “genuinely kind” and “always lifting others up.” He had a gentle demeanor and a quiet strength that made people feel safe and seen.

“This is one of the hardest things our church family has ever faced,” said Pastor Ryan Caldwell, who had mentored Langston for the past three years. “Langston wasn’t just a member of our youth group—he was a leader in every sense. He brought light into every room he walked into. We are devastated.”

The remainder of the camp has been canceled, and arrangements have been made for the students and staff to return home. Church leaders and counselors have begun working closely with grief professionals to offer emotional and spiritual support to the students and their families, many of whom are struggling to process the trauma of witnessing such a tragedy unfold.

A vigil was held Saturday evening at Community Christian Church, where hundreds gathered to mourn and remember Langston’s life. Candles were lit, songs were sung, and stories were shared—stories of a young man who, even at such a young age, left a lasting impact on those around him. Many recalled his humility, his quiet leadership, and his deep love for God.

Langston is survived by his parents, Marcus and Jolene Britton, and two younger siblings. In a statement released through the church, the Britton family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and asked for privacy as they grieve. “Langston was our heart,” the statement read. “We are broken, but we know he is with the Lord he loved so much. We ask for your prayers during this unimaginable time.”

In the coming days, Community Christian Church plans to host a memorial service to honor Langston’s life. A scholarship fund is also being established in his name to support other students who want to attend church camp—something Langston was deeply passionate about.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly joy can turn to sorrow, how fragile life can be, and how essential community is during times of profound grief. Langston Britton may be gone, but the light he brought to this world continues to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
