A devastating early morning crash on Detroit’s east side has left two people dead and two others injured after a vehicle slammed into the side of a commercial building. According to the Detroit Police Department, the fatal single-vehicle incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of Gratiot Avenue and French Road—a busy corridor in the eastern part of the city.
Authorities responded to the scene following 911 calls reporting a vehicle had crashed into the wall of a structure. When first responders arrived, they discovered a mangled vehicle lodged into the southern wall of Nationwide Furniture, a locally known retailer located at the corner of the intersection. The force of the crash tore a large hole in the building’s exterior, scattering debris across the sidewalk and interior of the property.
Inside the vehicle were four adult occupants. Two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. One was rushed to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition. The fourth occupant sustained less severe injuries and is currently in stable condition.
At this time, the identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Detroit Police believe excessive speed played a major role in the crash. Preliminary investigations suggest the vehicle was traveling at a dangerously high rate when the driver lost control. Skid marks near the scene and the extent of the structural damage further support this assessment. Officials have not confirmed whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
The Detroit Police Department’s Fatal Squad is now spearheading the investigation. Crews remained at the scene for several hours, surveying damage, gathering evidence, and speaking with witnesses. Nearby surveillance footage from adjacent businesses and street cameras is also being reviewed to provide additional clarity on the vehicle’s movement and velocity prior to the collision.
Local residents and business owners were left stunned by the crash, which occurred in a commercial and residential mixed-use area. One local business owner told FOX 2, “This intersection sees its fair share of fast drivers, especially late at night. But we’ve never seen anything like this—it’s heartbreaking.”
Nationwide Furniture, which has served the community for years, sustained significant damage. While the building was unoccupied at the time of the crash, store managers say operations will be suspended temporarily as they assess the full extent of structural repairs. “We’re just grateful no one inside the store was hurt. Our hearts go out to the families involved in this tragedy,” one staff member said.
This incident adds to a growing concern over traffic-related fatalities in Detroit. According to city records, speeding remains one of the leading causes of serious crashes, particularly during overnight hours when enforcement is limited.
Authorities urge the public to remain cautious and adhere to posted speed limits, especially in areas with known accident risks.
Anyone with additional information about the crash is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
More updates will follow as the investigation continues and as the victims are officially identified.
