In Loving Memory of Justin Aguila & Angel Martinez Tragic Losses in the Grand Sierra Resort Shooting

It is with profound sorrow and collective grief that we share the heartbreaking news of the deaths of Justin Aguila, 33, of Southern California, and Angel Martinez, 66, of the Reno-Sparks area, who were among the victims of a tragic and senseless shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort in Sparks, Nevada, on Monday, July 28, 2025.

The Sparks Police Department has identified the shooter as 26-year-old Dakota Hawver of Reno, who reportedly opened fire with a 9mm handgun, discharging approximately 80 rounds using multiple magazines. The firearm had been legally purchased two years prior, and recent purchases of ammunition were made in the lead-up to this violent incident. Authorities have confirmed that Hawver had no known criminal background or documented mental health history. A motive remains unclear, and investigators have yet to identify any connection between Hawver and his victims.

Remembering Justin Aguila

Justin Aguila, 33, was in town from Southern California, visiting Reno as part of a bachelor party with his close friends. Described by loved ones as vibrant, loyal, and full of life, Justin was a cherished son, brother, and friend who brought joy and humor into every room he entered. He had a magnetic personality and a heart full of love, always putting the needs of others before his own.

Tragically, Justin and his close friend, Andrew Canepa, were standing in the valet area waiting for a ride to the airport when they were ambushed and shot from behind. Their lives were senselessly cut short, leaving behind grieving families, shattered friendships, and a community struggling to process the enormity of the loss.

A GoFundMe page has been established to support Justin’s family with funeral expenses and the long road of healing that lies ahead.

Honoring Angel Martinez

Angel Martinez, 66, of the Reno-Sparks area, was known for his gentle spirit, unwavering work ethic, and dedication to his family. A longtime resident of the community, Angel was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend to many. He was the kind of person who would stop to help a neighbor or share a kind word with a stranger.

On the day of the shooting, Angel was simply driving through the Grand Sierra Resort parking lot when Hawver ambushed him. It was a random and horrific act of violence that stole a beloved man from his family and community.

Angel’s loss is being deeply felt across the Reno-Sparks region. A GoFundMe page has also been launched in his memory to help ease the burden on his grieving family during this unimaginable time.

A Community in Mourning

This senseless tragedy has left the city of Sparks and the broader community in mourning. Two additional victims remain hospitalized but are expected to survive. Meanwhile, the suspected shooter, Dakota Hawver, remains in critical condition.

The Sparks Police Department, along with local and federal investigators, continues to search for answers as the investigation unfolds. Community members are rallying around the affected families with love, donations, and tributes to the lives lost far too soon.

In the wake of this violence, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of holding our loved ones close. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of Justin Aguila and Angel Martinez, and to all those who knew and loved them. May their memories be a blessing, and may justice be served in the name of their lives lost.
