Grand Sierra Resort Shooting Suspect Dakota Hawver Dies from Injuries Sustained in Attack

RENO, NEVADA — Authorities have confirmed the death of Dakota Hawver, the 26-year-old man suspected of opening fire at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno earlier this week. Hawver succumbed to injuries he sustained during a shootout with law enforcement shortly after the tragic incident, which occurred on Monday, July 28, 2025.

Details of the Shooting

The violent attack unfolded around 7:30 a.m. in the valet area of the resort. Hawver, armed with a 9mm handgun, initially experienced a weapon malfunction before regaining control and unleashing more than 80 rounds. Witnesses say he indiscriminately targeted individuals near the front entrance of the hotel and in the adjacent parking area.

Among the victims were:

  • Justin B. Agulia, 33
  • Andrew C. Canepa, 33
  • Angel Martinez, 66

Agulia and Canepa, both from Southern California, were visiting Reno for a bachelor party. Martinez, a longtime Reno resident and casino employee, was shot while driving through the area.

Three other individuals were injured, two critically. One victim has since been released from the hospital.

Law enforcement responded quickly to the scene. Officers engaged Hawver in an exchange of gunfire, during which he was struck. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital, where he remained in critical condition before dying on Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.

Suspect Background

Investigators say Dakota Hawver had no known criminal record and no documented history of mental illness. He had legally purchased the firearm used in the attack approximately two years ago. Authorities have not identified a motive, and there is currently no known connection between Hawver, the victims, or the Grand Sierra Resort.

Court records show Hawver was recently involved in a child support case and had been ordered to increase payments to his 4-year-old daughter just days before the shooting, leading investigators to consider personal and financial stress as potential factors. However, this remains unconfirmed.

Ongoing Investigation

The case is being led by the Sparks Police Department, in coordination with multiple law enforcement agencies. Although the suspect is now deceased, investigators are continuing to gather evidence, speak with witnesses, and piece together the timeline and reasoning behind the attack.

The Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled all three deaths as homicides due to gunshot wounds.

Remembering the Victims

As Reno grieves, tributes continue to pour in for the lives lost in this senseless act of violence. The community mourns the tragic deaths of Agulia, Canepa, and Martinez—each remembered as hardworking, kind, and full of life.

Law enforcement officials remain committed to full transparency and ensuring the victims and their families receive the support they need during this difficult time.

Anyone with further information is encouraged to contact the Sparks Police Department.

May the victims rest in peace, and may their families and loved ones find comfort in the days ahead.
