We are heartbroken to share the passing of Barbara Wakefield, one of the esteemed Presidents of the Down Syndrome Parent Group (DSPG) of Buffalo. Today, we pause not only in mourning but in deep gratitude, as we honor the extraordinary life and lasting legacy she leaves behind.
Barbara was more than just a leader—she was a beacon of hope, a passionate advocate, and a guiding light for countless families in our community. Her work with DSPG was not simply a title or a role—it was a mission of the heart. She gave herself fully to the cause of inclusion, education, empowerment, and love for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
Through her vision, determination, and boundless compassion, Barbara helped build a stronger, more connected support network for families navigating the journey of Down syndrome. Her influence extended far beyond meetings and events; it was felt in the encouragement she offered, the warmth she shared, and the way she showed up—day in and day out—with empathy and strength.
Barbara was also a treasured friend and supporter of GiGi’s Playhouse, where her joy and dedication were evident in every interaction. Whether organizing, advocating, mentoring, or simply offering a kind word, she inspired everyone around her to see the value and beauty in every life.
Her legacy will live on through the programs she strengthened, the lives she uplifted, and the hearts she touched. In every step forward we take as a community—toward greater acceptance, inclusion, and celebration—we carry Barbara’s spirit with us.
To Barbara: Thank you for your leadership, your kindness, and your unrelenting belief in the worth of every individual. Your work has created ripples that will last for generations. We will continue your legacy with the same love and passion you showed us.
Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. May you find comfort in the impact she made and the love she so freely gave.
