DETROIT, MI – A quiet residential neighborhood on Detroit’s east side was shattered by gunfire early Thursday morning, leaving two young children injured and a community stunned.
According to the Detroit Police Department, the shooting occurred on Arcola Avenue, near Van Dyke and Lynch, just after midnight on Thursday, July 31, 2025. Two children—a 7-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy—were sleeping inside their home when bullets suddenly tore through the walls, striking them as they lay in their beds.
Preliminary reports indicate that two unidentified suspects arrived in a vehicle, exited, and opened fire on the home before fleeing the scene. Multiple rounds were fired, some penetrating the front of the house and causing damage to the interior. At the time of the shooting, the home was occupied by both parents and several other children, none of whom were physically injured.
Emergency services responded swiftly, and both children were rushed to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, despite the traumatic nature of the injuries, medical staff report that both victims are expected to recover. One of the children reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while the other suffered a graze wound to the torso.
Detroit Police have not yet identified a motive for the shooting and are currently exploring several leads, including whether the house was targeted or mistakenly attacked. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the neighborhood and canvassing the area for witnesses who may have seen or heard the gunfire or the suspects’ vehicle before or after the shooting.
