ANACONDA, MT — A tragic and violent scene unfolded early Friday morning in downtown Anaconda, where four individuals were shot and killed in what authorities believe was a targeted attack at the Owl Bar, located on 3rd Street. The incident, which shook the quiet Montana town to its core, triggered a massive law enforcement response and left residents on edge as the alleged gunman remained at large for hours.
According to preliminary information released by local officials, the shooting began shortly after 10:00 a.m., when an armed suspect, believed to be carrying an AR-15-style rifle, entered or approached the Owl Bar and opened fire. Witnesses inside the bar and in nearby businesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, followed by screams and panic as patrons fled the scene.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, and the area was soon overwhelmed with state troopers, sheriff’s deputies, and local police, who cordoned off streets and advised residents and business owners to shelter in place. Schools and nearby facilities were placed on lockdown as a precaution.
“We can confirm multiple fatalities at this time,” said a law enforcement source, who asked not to be named due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. “We are working around the clock to locate the suspect and ensure the safety of the community.”
Eyewitnesses on the scene described a chaotic atmosphere. “I heard he killed four at the Owl Bar. Seven police cars are circling,” said one resident, who watched from their home as officers canvassed the neighborhood. Another individual posted on social media that a residence near the bar had been surrounded, as police believed the suspect might be barricaded inside.
While details remain limited, unconfirmed scanner traffic indicated that the suspect may have attempted to flee the area toward Philipsburg, a small town approximately 30 miles west of Anaconda. This prompted regional law enforcement agencies to expand the search radius and issue alerts to surrounding communities.
As of Friday evening, no official word had been released regarding the suspect’s identity or apprehension. Authorities have not confirmed whether the attack was random or premeditated, though they indicated that all possibilities are being investigated.
The names of the four deceased victims have not yet been made public, pending notification of family members. Grief counselors and victim support teams have been mobilized to assist those affected by the tragedy.
Montana Governor and Anaconda’s local leaders have expressed condolences, calling the shooting “an unthinkable act of violence” and promising full support to law enforcement agencies as they work to bring the perpetrator to justice.
“This is a heartbreaking day for Anaconda,” said one city official. “We ask for patience, support, and above all else, safety as this investigation continues.”
Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is urged to contact local law enforcement immediately. Residents are reminded not to approach the suspect if spotted and to dial 911.
The investigation remains active, and updates will be provided as soon as new information becomes available.
