It is with heavy hearts and deep respect that we announce the passing of former Assistant Fire Chief David “Pappy” Sutherland, who departed this life on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. His passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the story of our fire department and our community—one written in courage, leadership, and unwavering dedication to service.
David, known affectionately to many as “Pappy,” was far more than a firefighter. He was a mentor, a brother in service, and a cherished friend to all who had the honor of working beside him. With decades of experience under his belt, he served his department and community with distinction, rising through the ranks with honor and humility to become Assistant Chief.
Throughout his career, David exemplified what it meant to be a firefighter—brave, dependable, compassionate, and always ready to put others before himself. Whether racing into danger to save lives or guiding younger firefighters with wisdom and patience, Pappy led by example. He earned the respect of his peers not only through his skill and dedication but through his deep sense of integrity and kindness.
Beyond the badge, Pappy had a heart full of warmth and generosity. His laughter could fill a room, his stories were legendary, and his presence brought comfort and strength to those around him. He was a rock in times of crisis, a calming voice in moments of fear, and a source of light and humor when it was needed most. He didn’t just serve his community—he loved it deeply, and that love was felt in every life he touched.
His legacy will live on in the firehouse halls, in the lives of those he trained and mentored, and in the hearts of his fellow first responders who called him both leader and friend.
