PATERSON, NJ — A Paterson man is facing multiple criminal charges after being arrested in connection to a disturbing series of assaults and vandalism incidents that targeted jitney bus drivers operating throughout Passaic County. The Passaic County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Juan C. Hichez, 37, following an extensive investigation that began earlier this year.
Hichez was taken into custody on July 29, 2025, in the area of Madison and Park Avenues in Paterson. According to investigators, he is suspected of carrying out a string of violent acts dating back to January 2025, during which he repeatedly assaulted jitney bus operators, damaged buses, and avoided paying for fare.
Authorities say the crimes were not isolated, but part of a sustained and escalating pattern of aggression toward public transit workers. In several reported incidents, Hichez allegedly boarded buses without paying, became physically confrontational with drivers, and in some cases, caused significant damage to bus interiors and exteriors.
As a result of the months-long investigation, Hichez has been charged with the following:
- Aggravated Assault on a Motorbus Operator
- Criminal Mischief
- Theft of Services
- Unlawful Possession of a Weapon
Officials have not yet detailed what type of weapon was allegedly involved, nor the exact number of attacks attributed to Hichez. However, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the charges stem from multiple incidents that jeopardized the safety of both drivers and passengers.
“This type of behavior endangers lives and undermines the safety of our public transportation system,” said Passaic County Sheriff Thomas Adamo.
“Citizens should feel safe as they travel throughout our County. Illegal behavior will not be tolerated, and we will continue to pursue those who threaten public safety.”
Hichez was apprehended without incident and is currently being held in county custody, pending a scheduled court appearance. Authorities are also reviewing surveillance footage from various buses and interviewing witnesses to build a comprehensive case.
The Passaic County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about similar jitney bus incidents involving Hichez to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the department’s hotline.
For many working families and individuals in Paterson, jitney buses serve as a crucial mode of affordable transportation, connecting them to jobs, schools, healthcare, and community resources. Sheriff Adamo emphasized the county’s commitment to safeguarding both the passengers who rely on these services and the operators who make them possible.
The investigation remains ongoing, and more charges may be filed as new information becomes available.
