In Memoriam: Ralph C. Sitcer Honoring 59 Years of Dedicated Service to the Valatie Fire Department

The Valatie Fire Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of our most cherished and respected members, Ralph C. Sitcer. A Life Member with an extraordinary 59 years of service, Ralph’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of our department and our community.

Ralph’s passing marks the end of an era—a lifetime of unwavering dedication to the fire service and to the people of Valatie. Through nearly six decades, he stood as a shining example of what it means to serve with honor, integrity, and heart. His commitment to the mission of the fire department, to the safety of our neighbors, and to the spirit of volunteerism helped shape not only the department’s traditions but also its future.

A Life of Service and Brotherhood

Ralph joined the Valatie Fire Department in an era when fire service was less about equipment and more about grit, bravery, and community. Over the years, he answered countless calls, supported his fellow firefighters, and gave generously of his time and wisdom. From fighting fires and responding to emergencies, to helping with parades, fundraisers, and training younger recruits, Ralph embodied the very spirit of what it means to be a firefighter and a brother in service.

He was known for his steady presence, sharp mind, and generous heart. Whether he was offering a guiding hand to a new member or sharing stories from decades past, Ralph built bridges between generations within the department. His memory is etched into every inch of our firehouse—from the apparatus bays to the meeting room—and his presence will be deeply missed at every gathering.

Shaping a Department and a Community

To serve for 59 years is a rare and remarkable feat—one that speaks volumes about Ralph’s character and his love for the community he called home. His service helped build the foundation of what the Valatie Fire Department is today: a team rooted in commitment, respect, and tradition.

Current members often credit Ralph for inspiring them to join or stay with the department. His leadership didn’t come from titles or rank, but from the consistent example he set—showing up, doing the work, and doing it with humility.

A Grateful Farewell

As we mourn the loss of a true fire service legend, we also celebrate the life he lived so fully and so selflessly. Ralph answered the call, again and again, never asking for recognition, only hoping to make a difference. He did exactly that—for the department, for the community, and for everyone who had the honor of knowing him.

We extend our deepest condolences to Ralph’s family, loved ones, and lifelong friends. The entire Valatie Fire Department stands with you in this time of sorrow, and we thank you for sharing Ralph with us for so many years. His legacy will endure in the lives he touched, the department he helped shape, and the brotherhood that continues to carry his spirit forward.

Rest Easy, Brother

Your work is done, Ralph. You’ve served with distinction and heart. Your legacy is secure, and your place in our hearts is eternal.

Rest easy, brother. We’ll take it from here.
