Detroit Double Shooting Near Stoepel Park Leaves One Dead, Another Seriously Injured

DETROIT, MI – A quiet Saturday evening near Stoepel Park on Detroit’s west side was shattered by gunfire, leaving one young man dead and another person hospitalized in serious condition. According to the Detroit Police Department, the incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, near the intersection of Lyndon and Auburn streets.

Authorities were alerted to the shooting by a ShotSpotter activation, a gunshot detection technology that quickly notifies police of potential firearm discharges. Responding officers arrived at the scene within minutes to find two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

One of the victims, a man believed to be in his early 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, whose identity and age have not been disclosed publicly, was rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in temporary serious condition.

The area near Lyndon and Auburn, just steps away from Stoepel Park—a place typically filled with families, youth sports teams, and residents enjoying weekend recreation—was quickly cordoned off with police tape as investigators combed the scene for evidence. Officers conducted interviews with nearby residents and potential witnesses, though no suspect description or motive has been released by authorities as of Sunday morning.

A Community Reeling

News of the shooting has left the surrounding neighborhood shaken. Stoepel Park, known as a gathering place for community events, basketball games, and picnics, is a focal point for many families on Detroit’s west side. The sudden outbreak of violence just steps from the park has many questioning how such brutality can continue so close to home.

“I bring my kids here all the time,” said one nearby resident. “You never think something like this is going to happen so close. This park is supposed to be a safe place.”

Community leaders and local advocates have long voiced concerns about gun violence in Detroit neighborhoods, and Saturday’s shooting adds another tragic entry to an already grim list of summer violence.

Investigation Ongoing

Detroit Police have confirmed that the investigation is active and ongoing. Homicide detectives, forensic units, and additional patrol officers remain involved in gathering surveillance footage, processing shell casings, and canvassing the area for leads. At this time, police have not confirmed whether the victims were targeted or caught in crossfire.

Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. Tipsters can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

The identity of the deceased victim has not yet been publicly released, pending notification of next of kin.

A Broader Concern

The shooting near Stoepel Park is part of a troubling pattern of gun violence in Detroit, where, despite increased law enforcement efforts and community-based initiatives, firearm-related homicides continue to claim lives—particularly those of young Black men under the age of 30. City officials have emphasized the importance of community cooperation in solving these crimes and preventing future tragedies.

Mayor Mike Duggan and Police Chief James White have both previously called for greater investment in neighborhood outreach programs, conflict resolution initiatives, and economic support services as ways to address the root causes of violence. However, until the systemic issues of poverty, access to firearms, and lack of opportunity are addressed, incidents like Saturday’s shooting are likely to persist.

Moving Forward

As the community awaits updates on the survivor’s condition and prays for justice for the deceased, there is once again a sense of urgency to not only solve this crime, but to break the cycle of violence that continues to impact Detroit neighborhoods.

“This can’t be the new normal,” said a local youth mentor who works with teens in the area. “We have to protect our young people and reclaim our spaces. Parks should be places of peace, not places where lives are lost.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the Detroit Police Homicide Unit or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.

This is a developing story.
