DESERT AIRE, WA — A man is in critical condition following a shooting that occurred late Saturday afternoon at a Shell gas station in the Desert Aire community, prompting an active investigation by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO).
According to initial reports from the GCSO, deputies responded to multiple 911 calls around 4:15 p.m. regarding gunfire at the Shell station on Desert Aire Drive SW, located in the heart of this normally quiet Columbia Basin community. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered an adult male suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders from Grant County Fire District 8 immediately provided medical aid before the victim was airlifted by helicopter to a regional trauma center. His current condition has not been publicly disclosed, but officials confirm that his injuries are critical and potentially life-threatening.
Ongoing Search for Suspects
As of Saturday evening, the GCSO’s Major Crimes Unit remains at the scene, working alongside detectives and crime scene technicians to piece together the circumstances of the shooting. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect or suspects fled the area before deputies arrived.
Detectives are actively gathering evidence, reviewing surveillance footage from the gas station and nearby businesses, and speaking with potential witnesses. Sheriff’s officials emphasized that the investigation is in its early and preliminary stages, and that information may evolve as more details come to light.
“Right now, our top priority is identifying the suspect or suspects involved and understanding what led to this shooting,” said GCSO spokesperson Kyle Foreman. “We are urging anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward.”
Community on Edge
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the Desert Aire community, a quiet residential and recreational area near the Columbia River, known for its golf courses, vacation homes, and small-town atmosphere.
Residents expressed concern over the violent incident happening at a busy public location. The Shell station, a common stop for fuel and supplies for locals and visitors alike, was temporarily closed as investigators cordoned off the scene with crime scene tape.
“I never thought something like this would happen here,” said local resident Maria Esteban, who lives just blocks from the gas station. “We’re a tight community. It’s scary knowing that someone could do this and just disappear.”
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office has increased patrol presence in the area to reassure residents while the investigation is ongoing.
Public Assistance Requested
Authorities are urging anyone who was near the gas station at the time of the shooting — especially those who may have captured dashcam footage or photos — to come forward. Even seemingly insignificant observations could be key to identifying those responsible.
Anonymous tips can be submitted to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office at (509) 762-1160 or through the Grant County Crime Stoppers tip line.
At this time, law enforcement has not released any suspect descriptions, and no arrests have been made. Officials also have not yet determined whether the victim was targeted or if the shooting stemmed from a dispute or other criminal activity.
Investigation Continues
As the community awaits answers, the GCSO urges patience and caution. Updates will be provided through the sheriff’s official social media pages and local news outlets as more verified information becomes available.
This is a developing story, and details will continue to emerge as the investigation progresses. For now, one thing is clear: Desert Aire has been shaken by a violent event, and local authorities are working around the clock to ensure justice is served.
