Highway 79 Reopens Following Fatal Crash in Petrolia

PETROLIA, TX – After hours of closure due to a tragic accident, Highway 79 is now fully open to traffic, authorities have confirmed. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Public Safety had shut down the highway between State Highway 148 and Jones Street following a deadly two-vehicle collision near Prairie Avenue.

The crash, which occurred earlier today, claimed the life of at least one individual. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene immediately, where they worked to secure the area, assess the damage, and provide medical assistance. Sadly, despite these efforts, one life was lost in the incident. The name of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

“Our hearts are heavy today,” the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “We extend our sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim. This is a deeply saddening event for our community.”

Following the crash, Highway 79 was closed for several hours to allow for a thorough investigation and clean-up. The Texas Department of Public Safety led the investigation into the cause of the collision, and crews worked diligently to clear the roadway and make it safe for travel once again.

Throughout the closure, traffic was diverted to alternative routes, and local residents were asked to avoid the area. First responders and investigators remained on-site for much of the day, and their swift and professional work has now made it possible to reopen the highway.

Motorists are now permitted to travel through the previously restricted stretch of Highway 79. Drivers are still advised to remain cautious in the area and always obey traffic laws to help prevent future tragedies.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of the road and the importance of driver awareness and safety. Authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances surrounding the crash or whether additional individuals were injured.

The community of Petrolia and Clay County mourns with the victim’s family, and officials have asked the public to keep them in their thoughts during this time of grief.

Further updates will be released as the investigation continues. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact the Texas Department of Public Safety or the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
