Michigan City Police Investigating Early Morning Shooting Near Matey’s on Franklin Street

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — August 3, 2025
Michigan City Police are investigating a shooting that took place in the early morning hours of Sunday near one of the city’s busiest downtown establishments. According to the Michigan City Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 2:34 a.m. to the 100 block of Franklin Street, near Matey’s Restaurant and Bar, following reports of gunfire.

Upon arrival, first responders located an individual who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency medical personnel on scene provided immediate care before transporting the victim to Franciscan Health Michigan City. The condition of the individual has not yet been disclosed, and authorities have not released the victim’s name at this time, pending family notification.

The area surrounding Matey’s — a popular nightlife spot, especially on weekends — was quickly cordoned off with police tape as officers secured the scene and worked to gather preliminary details. In response to the severity of the incident, the Michigan City Police Department’s Detective Bureau was summoned to take over the investigation.

Detectives were seen working throughout the early morning, processing the scene for evidence, canvassing the area, and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. Witnesses who were present at the time of the incident were interviewed, though officials have not yet released any information regarding a possible suspect or motive.
