On Sunday, August 3, 2025, at approximately 4:15 a.m., tragedy struck the city of Spartanburg when police officers responded to a report of gunfire at 314 Collins Avenue, Apartment B. What followed was a deeply disturbing discovery that has left the community mourning the loss of one of its youngest and most innocent lives—Zymir Demarco Smith, a 7-month-old infant.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found clear evidence of gunfire at the apartment. As they entered the home, they followed a trail of blood that led them to a heart-wrenching scene: Zymir had been struck by a bullet in the neck while he and his mother were asleep. Despite the swift arrival of emergency medical personnel, Zymir Demarco Smith was unresponsive and tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
A Child Caught in Senseless Violence
Initial reports indicate that Zymir and his mother were sleeping peacefully when several unknown suspects opened fire on the residence. Multiple rounds pierced the walls and windows of the apartment, one of which fatally struck Zymir. Authorities believe this was a targeted shooting, though Zymir himself was in no way the intended target.
The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office later confirmed the infant’s identity as Zymir Demarco Smith, a resident of the home. His sudden and violent death has left his family devastated and the broader community in collective shock.
A Community Demands Justice
“This is a senseless and heartbreaking tragedy for our entire community,” said Major Art Littlejohn of the Spartanburg Police Department. “We will use every available resource to solve this case and hold those responsible accountable. We’re urging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to please come forward.”
Investigators are actively following leads, reviewing security footage from nearby areas, and conducting interviews in hopes of identifying the individuals responsible for the gunfire that ended Zymir’s life.
The Public’s Help Is Needed
The Spartanburg Police Department is asking anyone who may have information related to the shooting—especially individuals who were near Collins Avenue during the early hours of August 3—to come forward. Vigils and memorial events are being planned in his memory, as the community comes together to honor his brief but meaningful life.
His name—Zymir Demarco Smith—now stands as a symbol of the urgent need to stop senseless gun violence and protect the most vulnerable among us.
