The community of Middle Paxton Township and surrounding areas are mourning the untimely death of Gavin J. Long, a 20-year-old motorcyclist whose life was tragically cut short in a three-vehicle collision on Interstate 78 in Salisbury Township on Sunday morning, August 3, 2025.
According to the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office, Gavin was pronounced deceased at the scene at 11:15 a.m. The cause of death was determined to be multiple blunt force injuries, and the manner of death was ruled accidental by Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio.
The Incident
The fatal crash occurred around 10:00 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-78 near mile marker 58.8, as reported by Trooper Nathan Branosky, public information officer for Pennsylvania State Police Troop M.
At the time of the collision, Gavin was operating a 2024 Yamaha motorcycle in the middle lane of the highway. Directly ahead of him was a 2022 Volvo semi-trailer, while a 2025 Cadillac Escalade was traveling in the adjacent left lane.
Authorities say that as Gavin attempted to change lanes, he sideswiped the rear driver’s side of the semi-trailer. The impact caused him to be thrown forward, at which point he was tragically struck by the semi-truck. His motorcycle continued to collide with the passenger-side front fender and bumper of the Cadillac, which was traveling next to him.
Despite the severity of the crash, no other injuries were reported among the other drivers involved.
An Ongoing Investigation
The incident remains under thorough investigation by the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, Pennsylvania State Police in Fogelsville, and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office. Investigators are working to piece together every detail of the crash to provide a clearer understanding of the chain of events that led to this heartbreaking loss.
