With profound sadness and immense respect, we honor the life and legacy of Detective John Brown, a devoted public servant, beloved family man, and cornerstone of the Tulsa Police Department. Detective Brown passed away recently, leaving behind a lifetime of courage, compassion, and commitment to justice. His absence leaves a deep void in the hearts of those who had the honor of knowing him, working alongside him, and being inspired by him.
Born in Oakland, California, in 1965, and raised in Beggs, Oklahoma, John Brown’s journey into law enforcement was ignited by the inspiration of his older brother, a fellow officer. It was a path he followed with heart and honor. On September 11, 1989, he joined the Tulsa Police Department, beginning what would become a remarkable 35-year career of distinguished service to the people of Tulsa.
Detective Brown’s work took him through a wide array of vital divisions—Burglary, Robbery, Patrol, VICE, the Special Investigations Division, and, beginning in 2012, the Homicide Unit. Throughout each assignment, he approached every case and every challenge with a rare blend of professionalism and empathy. He often remarked that the most difficult yet rewarding part of his work in Homicide was “getting inside a killer’s mind” in the relentless pursuit of justice for victims and their families. It was this deep sense of purpose that made him such a formidable and respected investigator.
In 1994, Detective Brown was awarded the Medal of Valor, a testament to his bravery and heroism during his time as an undercover investigator in the VICE unit. His actions that year saved lives and exemplified the selfless courage that defined his career. But accolades never changed him—he remained humble, focused, and grounded in his mission to protect and serve.
Beyond the badge, John was a man of integrity, humility, and deep love for his family. He was the beloved husband of Kathy, and a devoted father to three children, who were the pride and joy of his life. His love for his family extended even further with the arrival of his five grandchildren, each of whom brought him endless happiness. Whether he was working a late shift or enjoying a quiet moment at home, his love for his family was unwavering.
To his colleagues, John was more than a coworker—he was a brother, a mentor, and a friend. His bond with Sgt. Dave Walker and others in the department was marked by mutual respect, loyalty, and shared dedication to justice. His calm demeanor, sharp instincts, and wisdom earned him the trust of victims’ families, the respect of his peers, and the fear of those who sought to do harm.
As we say goodbye to Detective Brown, we do so with the deepest gratitude. We honor the years he gave to this city, the lives he touched, and the example he set. His legacy will not only live on in the cases he helped solve but in the spirit of those he trained and the values he instilled.
To Kathy, their children, grandchildren, extended family, and all who loved John: our hearts are with you. We stand beside you in mourning and in remembering a truly remarkable man.
Rest in peace, Detective John Brown.
Your service was heroic, your life was meaningful, and your memory will forever be a light in our community.
