NEW YORK, NY – The opera world is mourning the unexpected passing of Seth Malkin, a gifted bass, distinguished performer, and former soloist at the Seattle Opera and Metropolitan Opera Chorus. Seth passed away in New York City, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of artistry, compassion, and integrity that touched the hearts of audiences and colleagues alike.
From his early days in Youngstown, Ohio, to the grandest stages of Europe and the United States, Seth’s journey was one of unwavering dedication to his craft, sincere expression through music, and an abiding love for storytelling.
A Voice Born for the Stage
Seth’s love for music was evident from a young age. He graduated from Ursuline High School, where his talent began to blossom, and continued his formal training at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music. There, he honed his powerful bass voice and deepened his understanding of both classical opera and musical theater — two worlds he would later bridge with elegance and flair.
His professional career flourished in Europe, where he served as a soloist at the Stadttheater Regensburg in Germany. In the United States, he performed at New York City Opera and earned national acclaim at Seattle Opera, captivating audiences with a voice that was both rich in tone and rich in emotion.
But it was his role as a long-standing member of the Metropolitan Opera Chorus, beginning in 1996, that cemented his reputation as a cornerstone of one of the world’s greatest opera institutions. Over the course of more than two decades, Seth performed in hundreds of productions, covering more than 220 solos, including roles that spanned the operatic and theatrical spectrum.
A Multi-Talented Performer
Seth was more than an opera singer. He brought to the stage an unusual versatility, grounded in a deep love for dance, theater, and musical storytelling. With experience on Broadway, performances at Madison Square Garden, and tours across the nation, he was as comfortable in dramatic opera as he was in show-stopping musical theater numbers.
His unique blend of classical technique and theatrical sensibility made him a standout in dance-heavy scenes at the Met and other venues. Whether portraying a stately operatic figure or a character infused with humor and charm, Seth infused every role with humanity, wit, and undeniable presence.
A Generous Spirit
Offstage, Seth was just as impactful. Known for his compassionate nature, quick wit, and humble demeanor, he remained committed to using his gifts to uplift others. He volunteered for numerous community outreach programs, sang for underprivileged audiences, and generously offered his time and expertise to young singers and students through masterclasses and mentorship.
Colleagues recall his dry humor, emotional transparency, and loyal friendship. He had a way of making everyone feel seen, whether backstage during rehearsals or during casual dinners filled with stories and laughter.
Seth was also a self-professed “modern-day cowboy,” a nod to his love for horseback riding, Western films, and his personal style, which often brought a rustic charm into the world of opera. In intimate cabaret performances in New York City, he embraced this identity, blending it seamlessly with his musical background in performances that were equal parts soulful and entertaining.
A Legacy of Light and Sound
The Metropolitan Opera shared a touching tribute upon news of his death:
“We will miss his talent, his wry sense of humor, his self-deprecating humility, and his willingness to display his emotions in person as well as on stage. Most of all, we will miss his presence in our lives.”
Seth is survived by his beloved wife, Thea Parraga, his brother, Michael Malkin, and a broad and loving network of family, friends, and fellow artists who cherished his light.
His passing is a profound loss to the artistic community, but his memory will remain deeply alive through the art he created, the students he inspired, and the love he shared so freely. Whether performing under the grand lights of the Met or quietly encouraging a young vocalist, Seth Malkin’s legacy is one of joy, passion, and genuine humanity.
As theaters dim their lights in his honor, the sound of his voice — both literal and metaphorical — continues to echo through the halls of opera and beyond.
Rest well, Seth. You lived your art and your truth. Your voice, your heart, and your laughter will never be forgotten.
