COPIAH COUNTY, MS — August 4, 2025 — A horrific early-morning crash on Lilly Road in Copiah County has left 18-year-old Ken’Zavion Brown dead, another person critically injured, and three firefighters hospitalized following an unprecedented act of violence against emergency personnel at the scene.
According to Copiah County Sheriff Byron Swilley, the tragedy unfolded just after 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, when emergency personnel responded to a three-vehicle collision involving Brown, who was driving a 2013 Ford Mustang. Sadly, Brown was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
As firefighters arrived to secure the area, treat victims, and direct traffic, the situation took a chaotic and violent turn. Sheriff Swilley confirmed that multiple firefighters were assaulted while rendering aid and managing the scene. Three of the firefighters sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The extent of their injuries has not been released, and their names are being withheld out of privacy concerns.
“This is an extremely serious matter,” Sheriff Swilley said. “Our first responders were simply doing their jobs—working to save lives—when they were attacked. We are thoroughly investigating how and why this happened.”
At this time, no charges have been filed, and authorities have not confirmed who was responsible for the assaults. The case remains under investigation, both for the fatal crash that claimed the life of Ken’Zavion Brown and for the violence committed against emergency responders.
Details of the Crash
The collision involved three vehicles:
- A 2013 Ford Mustang driven by Ken’Zavion Brown, who died at the scene.
- A 2018 Infiniti Q50, whose driver was first taken to Copiah County Medical Center before being airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson. That individual’s current condition is unknown.
- A GMC Yukon, which was also involved in the wreck. Authorities have not provided an update on that driver’s status.
Investigators from the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Copiah County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash. They have not yet determined if alcohol, speed, distraction, or other factors contributed.
