PITT COUNTY, NC — The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) has confirmed the arrest of 31-year-old Aaron Moulton, a licensed medical professional, following a disturbing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) investigation initiated after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
Authorities say the PCSO Major Crimes Unit began investigating Moulton after receiving a report from the NCMEC, which had flagged suspicious online activity believed to involve the possession and possible distribution of exploitative content featuring minors. The tip led investigators to launch a detailed digital forensic probe into the suspect’s online behaviors, ultimately resulting in the identification of Moulton as the person of interest.
Moulton, who was practicing medicine and working outside of Pitt County at the time, was arrested with the assistance of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office. His arrest was carried out without incident.
He has been formally charged with two counts of Second-Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, a felony offense in North Carolina that encompasses knowingly possessing or accessing material that contains a visual representation of a minor engaged in sexual activity. These are serious charges that often carry heavy legal consequences, including potential prison time and mandatory sex offender registration upon conviction.
After his arrest, Moulton was granted a $150,000 secured bond. He has since been released from custody, pending further court proceedings.
Public Safety and Law Enforcement Response
In a statement released Tuesday, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and collaborating with national organizations and other law enforcement agencies to take swift action against crimes of exploitation:
“This case is a stark reminder of the critical role that tips from national watchdog organizations like NCMEC play in helping us locate and charge individuals involved in child exploitation,” a spokesperson for the PCSO stated. “Our Major Crimes Unit worked diligently and in coordination with other law enforcement partners to ensure that this individual was located and held accountable.”
Authorities have not released further details on the nature or volume of the material allegedly in Moulton’s possession, citing the ongoing investigation and the sensitive nature of the case.
About the Charges
Under North Carolina law, second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor is a Class E felony, punishable by up to 88 months in prison for each count, depending on prior criminal history. This charge typically applies to those found in possession of child pornography or digital materials featuring the sexual abuse of minors, even when no direct contact with a victim is alleged.
The case against Aaron Moulton is expected to proceed through the Pitt County court system. Prosecutors may consider filing additional charges as more evidence is reviewed.
Community Concerns and Next Steps
The arrest has sent shockwaves through parts of the community, especially given Moulton’s role as a healthcare provider. Law enforcement officials urge any additional individuals with knowledge of this case or potential victims to come forward.
Anyone with information relevant to this investigation is encouraged to contact the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit or their local authorities.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also offers a confidential online reporting system and hotline for those who suspect child exploitation or abuse.
Protecting Children from Online Exploitation
The PCSO emphasized the growing threat of CSAM-related offenses in the digital age, where technology can be misused to access and distribute harmful material:
“Our children are vulnerable online, and we as a society must remain vigilant. Parents, guardians, educators, and community leaders all play a role in ensuring digital safety.”
Law enforcement encourages parents to talk with their children about online activity, monitor device usage, and report any concerning interactions to proper authorities.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
