In Loving Memory of Jeremiah R. Astutu-Bofah & Charles Lipsey

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of Jeremiah R. Astutu-Bofah, 28, and Charles Lipsey, 24, who tragically lost their lives in a series of violent events that unfolded over the weekend in Harvey, a south suburban community in Illinois. Their deaths are the result of a senseless and devastating mass shooting that has left a lasting impact on the community and prompted urgent calls for peace and justice.

The violence began on Saturday evening, during what was intended to be a celebratory gathering at a house party on the 14400 block of Des Plaines Street. According to Harvey Police Deputy Chief Derrick Charles, what transpired was not a random act but rather the latest eruption in a long-standing personal feud between two groups.

Around 8 p.m., two individuals arrived at the party and opened fire into the crowd. In an act of defense, one of the attendees—who was legally armed with a concealed carry permit—returned fire. That exchange resulted in the death of Charles Lipsey, who was later identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. A second suspected gunman was wounded, transported to a hospital, and is now in custody.

In total, seven individuals were injured in the chaotic shooting, including a 4-year-old boy, whose presence at such an event underlines the innocent lives caught in the crossfire. Thankfully, as of Monday, all the wounded were reported to be in stable condition.

The tragedy, however, did not end there. In what authorities believe to be a retaliatory shooting, officers responded just hours later—at 4:50 a.m. on Sunday—to gunfire in the 200 block of Calumet Boulevard. There, police discovered Jeremiah R. Astutu-Bofah inside a minivan, fatally struck by multiple gunshots. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and another individual inside the vehicle was found unharmed.

Harvey Police Chief Cameron Biddings publicly confirmed that Jeremiah’s murder was likely an act of retribution linked to the earlier shooting. “We now know who the bad actors are,” Biddings said. “These are not random acts of violence or anonymous individuals. This violence arises from a persistent conflict between individuals with a long and disruptive history within our city.”

Both Jeremiah and Charles were more than just statistics in a string of violent incidents—they were sons, brothers, friends, and valued members of their communities. Their families, now burdened with unbearable grief, must also grapple with the circumstances under which their loved ones were taken.

Jeremiah R. Astutu-Bofah, at just 28 years old, was a young man whose life was cut far too short. Loved ones describe him as kind-hearted, intelligent, and someone who had dreams and aspirations still left to fulfill. His tragic death in what authorities are calling a retaliatory shooting is a sobering reminder of how cyclical violence can claim lives with terrifying speed and permanence.

Charles Lipsey, only 24, was also a life full of potential. While the details surrounding his role in the shooting are still under investigation, his death adds to the ever-growing toll that gun violence has taken on young lives in urban communities across the nation. No matter the circumstances, his loss is still deeply felt by his family and those who knew him.

As the investigation continues, the Harvey Police Department has vowed to pursue justice vigorously and end the cycle of violence that has plagued the city for far too long. “We are confident in our understanding of who is involved and what’s behind it,” said Deputy Chief Charles. “That said, innocent people have been hurt, including a young child, and we’re not going to allow this violence to continue.”

At this time, funeral arrangements for both Jeremiah and Charles are pending, and the families have asked for privacy as they mourn and begin the difficult process of healing.

Let us all take a moment to remember Jeremiah R. Astutu-Bofah and Charles Lipsey—to honor their lives, and to recommit ourselves to seeking peace, unity, and safety in our communities. May their memories inspire us to address the root causes of violence and bring about the change that is so desperately needed.

Rest in peace, Jeremiah and Charles. You will not be forgotten.
