At approximately 11:20 P.M. on Friday, August 1, 2025, the Prestonsburg/Floyd County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call reporting that a motorist’s vehicle may have been shot on US 23 North near the Bull Creek Trade Center.
Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they spoke with two motorists who reported separate incidents: one was traveling northbound toward Prestonsburg, and the other southbound toward Allen within the construction zone near Bull Creek Trade Center. Both drivers stated their vehicles appeared to have been struck by gunfire. Initial statements provided by the two callers contained conflicting details regarding the type of suspect vehicle involved and the direction it was traveling. The area was thoroughly canvassed, but no suspect was located.
Preliminary review of surveillance footage from nearby cameras identified a possible suspect vehicle; however, the description is not being released at this time as investigators continue to verify its involvement.
The following morning, a third motorist came forward reporting their vehicle had also been struck by gunfire in the same area. Then, on Monday, a fourth motorist reported a similar incident. All four vehicles were hit in the same vicinity within a roughly twenty-minute window on Friday night.
Detective Dennis M. Hutchinson is leading the ongoing investigation. His team has identified the likely location of the shooter and is conducting an extensive review of video footage collected from three different locations surrounding the area. Authorities anticipate making a felony arrest in the coming days.
At this time, investigators believe the incidents to be an isolated series of events occurring within a short timeframe. Preliminary evidence suggests these shootings may have been a misguided scare tactic or prank rather than a targeted attack. Patrols in the affected area have been increased as a precautionary measure. Authorities emphasize that there is currently no indication of ongoing danger to the public.
Police stress the importance of immediate reporting in incidents of this nature. The delay in locating the shooter was partially due to the time elapsed between the events and when some victims reported them. Prompt notification enables faster response and increases the chances of apprehending suspects quickly.
If you were involved in these or any related incidents, or if you have any information that could aid the investigation, please contact the Prestonsburg Police Department at (606) 886-1010.
Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
