Westfield, IN — The Westfield Police Department is actively searching for a suspect believed to be armed and dangerous following an intense “active police incident” that unfolded Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of 196th Street and U.S. 31.
According to authorities, officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area, which quickly escalated into a brief pursuit. The suspect lost control and crashed the vehicle before opening fire, discharging multiple rounds at responding officers. Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene on foot and remains at large.
The suspect has been described as a male with dreadlocks, wearing a dark blue or black hoodie or sweatshirt. Law enforcement officials have warned the public that the individual is presumed armed and dangerous, urging residents and motorists in the vicinity to exercise extreme caution.
A large police perimeter has been established, spanning from 191st Street to 196th Street and U.S. 31 to Flippins Road, as officers continue to search the area. Residents living within this zone have been strongly advised to remain indoors, lock their doors, and avoid unnecessary travel. Community members outside the perimeter are also urged to stay clear of the area until the situation is resolved.
The Westfield Police Department is coordinating efforts with neighboring agencies, including the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, which is concurrently conducting a death investigation near Greensburg, highlighting the broad law enforcement activity in the region.
