A tragic scene unfolded Tuesday afternoon in Greenwood, Indiana, after a car veered off the road and plunged into a pond, leading to the death of the driver and injuries to two first responders who acted swiftly to save a life.
The crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. on August 5, 2025, near the intersection of East Worthsville Road and County Road 75 East, just east of U.S. 31. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene following reports of a vehicle submerged in water.
Driver Pulled from Submerged Car
According to the Greenwood Police Department, fire crews arrived promptly and worked quickly to extract the lone occupant from the vehicle, which had become partially submerged in the pond. The driver—whose identity has not yet been publicly released—was immediately transported to St. Francis Hospital. Sadly, despite the heroic efforts of the first responders, the driver was pronounced dead at the hospital.
First Responders Injured During Rescue
The rescue operation was not without risk to those involved. A Greenwood firefighter and a Greenwood police officer sustained minor injuries during the urgent effort to save the trapped driver, according to a spokesperson for the Greenwood Fire Department. Both are expected to fully recover and are currently receiving care.
“This was a challenging and emotional call,” said a department spokesperson. “Our crews did everything they could to get to the driver as quickly and safely as possible.”
Area Closed as Investigation Continues
In the aftermath of the crash, eastbound Worthsville Road remains blocked as police and investigators work to determine the cause of the incident. Motorists are being asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes while crews continue their work at the scene.
Multi-Agency Response
In addition to the Greenwood Fire and Police Departments, multiple agencies responded to the emergency, including the White River Township Fire Department, Bargersville Fire Department, Indianapolis Fire Department, Indianapolis EMS, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Their combined efforts ensured a swift and coordinated response to an incident that could have had even more severe consequences.
Community Support and Ongoing Investigation
The community of Greenwood has expressed both gratitude for the bravery of its first responders and sorrow for the life lost in this devastating crash. The name of the deceased driver has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not stated whether factors such as speed, medical emergency, or mechanical failure played a role in the crash.
Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. In the meantime, local officials are encouraging drivers to remain cautious, especially near bodies of water or intersections that may pose unexpected hazards.
