It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Kolby Aipa, a remarkable young soul who left an indelible mark on the surf community and beyond. Kolby wasn’t just a talented surfer—he was a shining example of the energy, heart, and spirit we hope to nurture in the next generation. His sudden passing has left a void that words can scarcely fill, but his memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him or see him ride the waves.
Kolby first caught our attention as a standout in the Grom Division at several of our RRR Surf Off contests. Even at a young age, he displayed a unique blend of raw talent and uncontainable stoke that made him a crowd favorite. Whether he was carving through a tricky set or flashing his ever-present grin on the beach, Kolby radiated a joy and love for the ocean that was infectious. As he moved on to the Juniors division, that same enthusiasm and effortless style continued to evolve. It was clear to all who watched him surf that he had something special.
But Kolby’s legacy extends far beyond competition results or perfectly executed turns. He was kind, respectful, and always amped to be part of something bigger than himself. Raised by a family deeply rooted in community values, Kolby—and his sister—were regulars at beach cleanups and surf events, always showing up with gratitude and humility. They didn’t just participate; they helped lead by example. It was families like the Aipas who reminded us why we do what we do at Drains to Ocean.
At D2O, our mission has always been about more than just surfing. It’s about using the love of the ocean to inspire environmental stewardship, camaraderie, and positive action—especially among youth. Kolby and his sister embodied that mission. They were the future we dreamed of: passionate, grounded, eco-conscious, and deeply respectful of the ocean and the community around them.
Kolby’s passing is a heartbreaking loss not just for his family, but for the entire Huntington Beach surf family, the D2O crew, and everyone who crossed paths with him. He was the kind of person who made you believe in the good that’s still out there—especially in our youth. His smile, his spirit, and his stoke will forever be a part of our collective memory.
We extend our deepest love and condolences to the Aipa family during this unimaginably difficult time. Know that Kolby’s presence and impact will never be forgotten. He will always be a part of the D2O family, woven into our story, and held in the highest regard in our hearts.
Rest in peace, Kolby.
You lived the way we all should—with joy, kindness, and passion.
Your wave may have ended far too soon, but your ripple effect will last forever.
— With love and aloha,
The Drains to Ocean (D2O) Crew
