GREENSBORO, N.C. (August 5, 2025) — A deadly officer-involved shooting is under active investigation after a confrontation on Marion Street ended in the death of a man suspected of trespassing.
According to a statement released by the Greensboro Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 4:06 p.m. when a uniformed officer was flagged down by a resident in the 1600 block of Marion Street. The resident reported a possible trespasser on nearby property and pointed the officer toward the man in question.
The officer approached the individual and attempted to engage in conversation to investigate the complaint. However, according to authorities, the man became uncooperative and refused to follow repeated commands.
Police say the situation quickly escalated when the man produced a weapon and moved aggressively toward the officer. In response to the perceived threat, the officer discharged their firearm, striking the man.
Immediately after the shooting, the officer called for emergency medical services and rendered aid at the scene. Despite these life-saving efforts, the man was pronounced dead on site.
His identity has not yet been released, pending notification of his next of kin.
As per department policy and standard protocol in incidents involving officer use of deadly force, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has been called in to lead an independent criminal investigation. Additionally, the Greensboro Police Department’s Professional Standards Division has launched an internal review to determine whether departmental procedures and policies were followed.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty, which is routine in such investigations, pending the outcome of both internal and external reviews.
No other injuries were reported, and authorities have not stated whether the suspect discharged his weapon during the encounter.
The Greensboro Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact investigators. Community members are also encouraged to remain patient as the investigation unfolds and the facts surrounding this critical incident come to light.
