KINGLSEY, Pa. — The Pennsylvania National Guard is mourning the tragic loss of Master Sergeant Elizabeth Lohrmann, a devoted and respected member of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard who passed away on August 3, 2025, while deployed to Guam.
Master Sgt. Lohrmann, 45, of Kingsley, Susquehanna County, died during a snorkeling incident at Tinian Island, a U.S. territory located in the Western Pacific. The cause of death is currently under investigation, but officials have confirmed her passing was a tragic accident that occurred while she was off-duty.
In response to the devastating news, Col. Robert S. Noren, commander of the 193rd Special Operations Wing (SOW), released a statement honoring her life and service.
“We are saddened by the loss of Master Sgt. Elizabeth Lohrmann, who was deployed to Guam and died Aug. 3 while snorkeling at Tinian Island,” said Col. Noren. “The 193rd SOW is standing down all flying operations on Aug. 5, and ensuring that chaplains, mental health, and family support personnel are available at the wing to assist personnel who wish to talk.”
Lohrmann’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Pennsylvania National Guard community, where she was known not only for her professionalism and leadership but also for her warmth, compassion, and commitment to service.
Maj. Gen. John R. Pippy, Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania National Guard, also issued a heartfelt message, emphasizing the Guard’s dedication to supporting those closest to her during this difficult time.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Master Sgt. Elizabeth Lohrmann,” said Maj. Gen. Pippy. “Right now, our focus is on supporting those closest to her—ensuring they have the care, resources, and space they need to grieve and begin healing. Master Sgt. Lohrmann was an outstanding Airmen, and a great person. Our hearts are with her family, friends, and fellow service members.”
Lohrmann had served honorably in the Pennsylvania Air National Guard for over two decades and was a well-respected leader within the 193rd SOW. Her career included numerous deployments and assignments that demonstrated her commitment to her country and fellow Airmen. Her loss is not only deeply personal to those who served alongside her, but also felt across the broader military family.
The 193rd SOW, based in Middletown, Pennsylvania, is one of the most active units in the Air National Guard, with critical roles in global special operations missions. The decision to temporarily stand down all flight operations on August 5 is a rare and solemn gesture reflecting the deep emotional impact of her death on the wing and its members.
Grief counseling and support services have been made available for personnel, both at home and abroad. Family members, friends, and colleagues are being encouraged to seek assistance and lean on one another during this time of mourning.
As the community grieves, preparations are underway to bring Master Sgt. Lohrmann home with full military honors. Funeral arrangements have not yet been publicly announced.
