Tragic Collision in Kent County: Jogger Struck and Killed in Fatal Crash

LANSING, MICH. — The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a heartbreaking tragedy that unfolded Monday afternoon, as a 53-year-old man from Dimondale lost his life after being struck by a pickup truck while jogging along a rural road. The fatal crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Lincoln Lake Avenue NE, just north of 16 Mile Road.

Authorities have confirmed that the victim, whose name has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man had reportedly been jogging when he was struck by the vehicle, bringing his run—and his life—to a sudden and tragic end.

The driver of the pickup truck, who has not been publicly identified, immediately called 911 following the incident and remained on the scene, fully cooperating with investigators. Preliminary information suggests that the crash may have been a devastating accident, but law enforcement officials have not ruled out any possibilities and continue to gather details to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the man who lost his life today,” said a spokesperson for the Kent County Sheriff’s Office. “This is a tragic and painful incident, and we are conducting a thorough investigation to understand what happened and whether any contributing factors were involved.”

Deputies closed a portion of Lincoln Lake Avenue for several hours Monday evening as crash reconstruction specialists worked the scene. The area, typically quiet and frequented by joggers, cyclists, and local traffic, became the center of a heartbreaking investigation as investigators documented evidence and spoke with witnesses, if any were present.

Although weather conditions were reported to be clear at the time of the crash, investigators will review all relevant information, including road conditions, visibility, driver impairment, speed, and other contributing factors. No citations or charges have been announced at this time.

Neighbors in the area expressed shock and sadness at the news. One resident, who declined to be named, described the stretch of Lincoln Lake Avenue as a common route for runners. “It’s not unusual to see people jogging here,” they said. “It’s peaceful, scenic… to hear something like this happened right here is just devastating.”

The victim is being remembered as a dedicated and active member of his community, someone who prioritized his health and enjoyed time outdoors. Friends and family have begun to share tributes on social media, expressing disbelief and heartbreak over his sudden and tragic passing.

“He was full of life, always out running or biking,” one friend wrote. “He didn’t deserve to go this way. It’s just so senseless.”

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office has stated that further information will be released as the investigation continues and once the man’s family has been fully notified.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerability of pedestrians and joggers on rural roads and the importance of heightened awareness by both drivers and those on foot. Safety advocates often urge communities to implement more pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, including designated running paths and improved signage, especially in areas where foot traffic is common.

At this time, no memorial services have been announced, though community members have already begun placing flowers near the site of the crash in remembrance of the victim. Local running groups are also reportedly planning a tribute run in his honor.

Anyone with information about the crash or who may have witnessed the moments before or after the collision is encouraged to contact the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

As the community grieves this loss, thoughts and prayers continue to pour in for the family and friends of the victim, whose life was taken far too soon.
